Our concept was to create a space that not only met the physical needs of patients but also embraced a holistic approach to mental health recovery. From the outset, we understood the importance of fostering an environment that would minimise the length of hospital stays while ensuring that every aspect of care was meticulously coordinated. ARCH worked closely with iMH to redefine traditional mental health care, blending clinical excellence with a hospitality-inspired approach. By prioritising comfort, dignity, and healing, we aimed to create a setting that feels more like a retreat than a hospital.

We envisioned seamless transitions for patients moving from hospital to home. The layout we crafted allows for easy navigation, guiding patients and their families through various stages of care in a calming and reassuring environment. Each corridor leading to the discharge area is infused with soft pastel tones and natural light, echoing the Queensland landscape to promote relaxation. The biophilic design elements, including lush exterior courtyards and sensory rooms, provide patients with vital connections to nature, further enhancing their recovery.

To promote quick recovery, our design prioritises comfort and familiarity. By incorporating elements that reflect the home environment—such as communal areas, pet-friendly rooms, and private spaces—we aimed to help patients rediscover a sense of normalcy and routine. The use of curved architectural lines and a spa-like ambience fosters a tranquil atmosphere, while passive privacy strategies ensure a sense of safety and discretion.

We also recognised the need to expand care options. As architects, we transformed an existing office building into a fully functional mental health facility, overcoming challenges such as repurposing a cold-shell structure and implementing acoustic treatments. Each facet of Nundah Private Hospital reflects our commitment to innovative, patient-centred design, paving the way for a more compassionate future in mental health care.
