Cairns Hospital Expansion Project

A redevelopment of an existing campus that will support the delivery of a broad range of high growth health services whilst supporting stronger linkages for teaching, learning and research.

The Cairns Hospital Expansion Project (CHEP) is one of a number of projects being carried out under the Accelerated Capital program (ACP). The ACP is primarily focused on delivering additional acute bed capacity into the health system in the short term.

CHEP will deliver a new multi-storey surgical centre, including 32 new beds, in addition to a refurbishment component within the existing hospital providing an additional 64 beds. The proposed surgical centre will be a new multi-storey building located near the existing Cairns Hospital campus and the new Cairns Tropical Enterprise Centre.

The new surgical centre will interface with both the existing hospital and adjacent development to form a health and innovation precinct.

Some key considerations for this project included:

  • Market analysis to inform the procurement methodology
  • Cost benefit analysis to assist with the evaluation of various sites
  • Functional planning that supports a change to service delivery
