Carnes Hill Community & Recreation Precinct

Both buildings strategically capitalise on their orientation, employ passive design principles, and maximise the influx of natural light, blending seamlessly into the landscape, harnessing the insula properties of the surrounding earth.

With a conceptual starting point of ‘Framing the Neighborhood’, Carnes Hill Community and Recreation Precinct (CHCRP) reconfigures what makes a community facility in the 21st century. CHCRP responds as a frame for community connections, helping a multifaceted, diverse community to work together. Designed for people of all ages, the precinct promotes healthy, active lifestyles with a well-equipped leisure centre, gym and indoor courts.

It consists of two buildings and both of which strategically capitalise on their orientation, employ passive design principles, and maximise the influx of natural light, blending seamlessly into the landscape, harnessing the insula properties of the surrounding earth and embracing the natural environment of the location.

The new library offers information services and technology and is co-located with a comprehensive Community Centre and café with tailored areas for community. Outdoor zones are designed as neighbourly spaces that are flowing, open, and transparent; within bold framing elements.

The two distinct buildings nestle into the landscape, acting as a gateway to the community, responding to the personality and human scale of the users. Building façades use a considered materials palette to present a calm, yet confident presence.
