Beaconsfield Community Centre

From the west the building presents itself as a monolithic composition of block work walls emerging out of the hillside, offering protection from from the hot west sun and the prevailing winter weather.

This community facility incorporates two key functions, a community centre and double kindergarten. It offers a double 30 place kindergarten, meeting and training spaces, kitchens, consulting rooms, a 400 seat multi-purpose hall, lounge foyer and management offices. The space planning provides effective separation of activities whilst providing easy access for all visitors.

The dramatic use of over-scaled masonry walls emphasises their shielding and protective function, enclosing the more intimately scaled entry forecourt. Distinctive angular forms and detailing are manifest throughout all parts of the building, both internally and externally. The strong horizontal articulation of both the block work and the metal cladding works as a unifying device. Restrained colour application is used to delineate key elements of the building.
