UNE Metro Campus

The recent refurbishment of areas within 28 George Street, Parramatta, Sydney, for the University of New England (UNE) Metro campus represents a significant advancement in educational facilities. ARCH was commissioned by UNE to enhance and redesign the space, resulting in a well-thought-out transformation.

This project effectively expands UNE's offerings and solidifies its presence in the Sydney region while optimising the use of the existing property. The new campus layout adds value to students' experiences, academics, and strategic partners.

The facility boasts several notable features:

  • The ground floor welcomes visitors with an inviting atmosphere, creating a strong positive first impression.
  • A clinical lab equipped with six beds and includes an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) room, a clean storage area, a preparation room, and a soiled utility room, all designed to provide students with realistic hospital training experiences.
  • There is a control room, an administrative area, and dedicated student breakout spaces, which allow educators to conduct assessments efficiently.
  • There are five classrooms, three of which can be converted into a larger multifunctional area to accommodate lecture-styled sessions, conferences, and other university events.
  • Adaptable learning spaces that accommodate diverse learning styles with dedicated student commons space that fosters collaboration.
  • Well-equipped kitchen and a range of essential amenities for enriched educational experiences.

"The concept of diverse learning styles recognises that students absorb and process information in various ways, each requiring distinct approaches to teaching and learning. In the context of the recently refurbished facility at the University of New England (UNE), this diversity is supported through adaptable learning spaces designed to cater to various preferences and methodologies.
Some students may thrive in traditional lecture settings, where direct instruction lets them absorb information straightforwardly. Others might benefit more from interactive and experiential learning environments, where they can engage with material hands-on and in real-world contexts. Incorporating these flexible spaces within the facility means that instructors can easily adapt their teaching strategies—whether through group discussions, projects, or practical applications—making creating a more inclusive educational experience possible."

Creating student commons and breakout areas allows for peer-to-peer learning and collaboration, which can be particularly beneficial for social learners who thrive in group settings. These communal spaces encourage interaction and the sharing of ideas, enhancing the learning experience through shared knowledge and perspectives.

By emphasising diverse learning styles through thoughtful design, UNE's refurbished facility accommodates individual student needs and fosters an environment where all students can engage, collaborate, and thrive academically. This commitment to inclusivity underscores the university's dedication to providing a holistic and adaptive learning experience that prepares students for the complexities of the modern educational landscape.

This refurbishment has successfully aligned with UNE's current needs while proactively addressing future educational trends and demands. It enhances the learning experience at UNE, promoting an innovative and collaborative academic environment.
