St Joseph’s College Treacy Centre
The best of old and new meet in this historic redevelopment
ARCH provided full architectural services for the historic restoration of The Treacy Centre at St Joseph’s College. The original structure was built in 1876 as the Brothers’ residence and teaching spaces. In the College Mission Statement the students educated at St Joseph’s are referred to as ‘Terrace Gentlemen: well-rounded, learned and respectful’.
ARCH has reflected these traits within the refurbishment by respectfully retaining as much of the existing historical features of the building as possible, while updating the facilities to cater to a diverse range of contemporary learning needs. The iconic 135 year old stone walls are repointed throughout the entire three levels of the building, bringing the facade back to its former glory.
Inside, the refurbishment includes the removal of the later additions and the installation of a new lift and stair structure to meet current day building and accessibility standards. The upper level is opened up to create a college museum and archives. New spaces for music teaching, performance, offices, meeting rooms, speech and drama laboratory and learning support facilities are also created.
