Fort Scratchley Historic Restoration
Community involvement in refurbishment preserved local history, ensuring generations can appreciate its story and significance.
Of major historical significance, 130 year old Fort Scratchley underwent conservation, maintenance and upgrade works to remove intrusive elements from the inner fort, and refurbish and restore the building. Redundant and ageing site mains and building services are renewed, power upgraded, communications reticulated and a wireless security system installed. New lighting is installed with dimmable lighting to reinforce the character of the tunnels.
ARCH design team responded to the priorities of this culturally significant site, its state of disrepair, its level of non-compliance and other specific requirements as identified by the project managers. Stakeholders, specialist consultants and authorities met for reviews throughout the process. Community participation was incorporated via workshops to identify and prioritise historical themes.
The fort tells a great story, at a unique, attractive site overlooking the harbour and the ocean. The conservation and redevelopment has given this significant place a new lease of life, preserved for future generations.
